John Blackwell, who drummed for Prince, D’Angelo & others, has died

John Blackwell Jr., who was Prince’s drummer in New Power Generation during the ’00s and played in D’Angelo’s band, The Vanguard, died on July 4. He was 43. Blackwell’s wife Yaritza shared the news via his social media, saying “My husband incredible drummer John Blackwell Jr. passed the way peacefully in my company today. Thanks God for his life and thanks everyone for their support.” John was diagnosed with two brain tumors in July, 2017 while on tour in Japan.

John also played with Justin Timberlake, P. Diddy, Cameo, Patti LaBelle and others. Rest in peace, John.
